Charles A. Tindley Music Academy
Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30pm-5:00pm
The Tindley Academy of Music was established in the Fall of 1988 as an outreach ministry of Third Baptist Church by its Pastor, Dr. Amos C. Brown. After six successful years, the Academy was incorporated in November of 1994 as an independent non-profit agency to better serve the total community, especially the inner-city youth of the Western Addition of San Francisco, with a quality artistic, academic, and cultural enrichment program.
Tindley's name honors Charles Albert Tindley, a minister and gospel music composer. Tindley's composition "I'll Overcome Someday" is credited as the basis for the U.S. Civil Rights anthem "We Shall Overcome."
Tindley Academy of Music offers a dynamic music education program for students aged 7 to 13. Through expert instruction in vocal and instrumental music, students learn fundamental techniques, music theory, and performance skills. The academy nurtures young talent, fostering a love for music while encouraging creativity and discipline in a supportive, faith-centered environment.
Tindley Academy is associated with The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Bridge to Arts & Music (BAM), led by Reverend James Parrish Smith, who is the Artistic Director and programmatic leader of Tindley.
