“If music be the food of love, play on.” – Shakespeare, Twelfth Night

Since its founding in the autumn of 1988 as an outreach ministry of Third Baptist Church, Tindley Academy of Music has been a beacon of hope, creativity, and opportunity for youth in San Francisco's Western Addition. Initially established by Dr. Amos C. Brown, the Academy became an independent non-profit agency in 1994, allowing it to expand its reach and impact. Today, the Academy stands as a vital institution dedicated to enriching the lives of youth through music education, character building, and cultural empowerment.

Honoring a Legacy: Who Was Charles Albert Tindley?

The Academy is named after Charles Albert Tindley (July 7, 1851 – July 26, 1933) an influential Methodist minister and gospel composer whose music has left an indelible mark on American history. His hymn “I’ll Overcome Someday” is widely credited as the foundation for the Civil Rights anthem, “We Shall Overcome.”

Tindley’s work bridged the gap between traditional hymnody and the evolving gospel music genre, making him a pivotal figure in American religious and cultural history. Tindley’s legacy of resilience, faith, creativity, and social justice continues to inspire the Academy’s mission of empowering young people through music.

Why Tindley Academy Matters

Tindley Academy is more than a music program—it’s a lifeline for children in underserved communities. Through a partnership with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Bridge to Arts & Music (BAM) program, Tindley provides tuition-free instrumental instruction, musical instruments, academic support, and a sense of community for students ages 6 to 12.

Music, often considered a universal language, does more than teach children how to play an instrument. At Tindley, it serves as a vehicle for personal growth, discipline, and cultural understanding. The Academy offers a foundation rooted in musical traditions, instilling pride and identity while preparing students for broader life challenges.

For many youth, Tindley is a space where they can feel seen and valued—a place that fosters self-confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging. By focusing on music literacy and performance, the program helps students develop skills that extend far beyond the stage. Whether or not they pursue careers in music, Tindley alumni carry forward lessons in discipline, teamwork, and communication, transforming their life trajectories.

What Students Gain

  1. Self-Confidence: Through consistent practice and performance, students build belief in their abilities.

  2. Discipline: Learning an instrument requires dedication, focus, and perseverance—qualities that spill over into other areas of life.

  3. Cultural Identity: Rooted in African-American traditions, the program connects students with their heritage while exposing them to global musical influences.

  4. Academic Support: Beyond music, the program emphasizes critical thinking, literacy, and oratory skills.

  5. Safe Haven: In a world filled with challenges, Tindley provides a nurturing environment where children can grow and thrive.

Enrolling for the Next Cohort: February 3 Start Date
